What to Expect

Audio: A simple question about general knowledge, everyday life, or basic science.  ·  Visual: Occasionally an image appears to provide context.  ·  Goal: Provide a one- or two-word answer.
02

The Do's and Don'ts

Listen for KeywordsThese questions test general academic knowledge acquired through education and everyday experience. When you hear the question, immediately identify the topic and activate what you already know about it.
Answer ImmediatelyIf you encounter unfamiliar words in the question, use context clues: the function described, the category named, or the verb used. These clues usually point directly to the answer. Then answer immediately when the recording ends.
Keep it BriefCertain words in the question carry stress and signal exactly what type of answer is needed -- these are the direction words. In "What instrument is employed to magnify miniscule objects?" the direction words are instrument and magnify. One or two words are sufficient.
Make a GuessIf you aren't sure, say the first logical word that comes to mind. You lose nothing for a wrong guess.
Don't Wait for a ToneIf you wait for a 'beep,' you might miss the first few seconds of your recording window.
Don't Use FillersAvoid 'Umm,' 'Uh,' or 'I think it is…' Just say the answer directly.
Don't OverthinkThe questions are designed to be simple. The most obvious answer is almost always correct.
Don't Pause Too LongIf you stay silent for more than 3 seconds, the microphone may close automatically.

Tips & Tricks

The Noun Rule

Most answers are nouns, people, places, things. If stuck, try to name the object or person being described.

Visualize the Context

If the question is about a library, imagine a library. Mental imaging helps recall related vocabulary faster.

Watch the Progress Bar

Finish your word before the blue bar reaches the end. Once it says 'Completed,' you are done.

Test-Taking Strategies & Practice

1 Activate your background knowledge

These questions test general academic knowledge. When you hear the question, immediately identify the subject area and think about what you already know. Broad reading on academic topics (science, geography, everyday life) builds the background knowledge that makes this task much easier.

2 Infer the meaning of unfamiliar words from context

If you hear an unfamiliar word, use the surrounding words as clues:

  • Function/purpose clue: "used to locate distant objects" tells you the answer is an optical instrument
  • Category clue: "what instrument" tells you the answer is a named tool or device
  • Verb clue: "magnify" tells you the answer makes small things look bigger (microscope)
3 Listen for direction words

Certain words in the question carry stress and signal exactly what type of answer is expected. In "What instrument is employed to magnify miniscule objects?" the direction words are instrument and magnify. Answer: microscope.

Answer with one or two words only. A direct answer scores the same as a full sentence.
